Frozen – Review

23 Mar

First off, I love my brother and sisters deeply, can’t conceive a world without them! And not because I just saw Frozen but every day ….

I do my thing, you do yours, just don't screw up.

I do my thing, you do yours, just don’t screw up.

Frozen, quite surprising.

I was mostly curious about the Oscar-winning song, but, to be honest, it was the film that left me thinking if the movie I just saw was Disney,  a decent try to step out of the box non the less.

I enjoyed it maybe close to the way I enjoyed old Pixar, and that is a good thing. I also liked the proposed target audience, not for kids only (I know some children hated the snow monster).

It was close to Brave, in terms of portraying family values, upbringing and how to build strong personalities, again… none of that is a bad thing.

The song is pretty cool yes, the film is ok, funny and entertaining… the average for the genre, at least there’s effort to bring something to the table.

But I wonder when will an animated film  be as revolutionary and creative that just adults can go and see it “sans kids” (and I am talking about decent animations not the R rated type) something like Studio Gigli, or Toy Story, UP or Wall. E. Dont we miss those kind of films? I kind of do.

I will refer to my imaginary rating system and give it an: OK you are just fine!

The Hobbit: The desolation of Smaug

27 Dec
Hey look that dragon can talk!

Hey look that dragon can talk!

6 days ago I went to the cinema to watch The Hobbit, with a friend who happens to like going to the movies just like me, he just doesn’t pay much of attention to them, so, when I asked him what did he think of the movie he said “the first one was better”

I respect people’s opinion just like anybody with a good sense of social interaction does, but after hearing that, I just started questioning myself and my choice in friends.

The first Hobbit my friend (I remember starting my clever reply this way) was amazing, it was different that TLOTR because it is another book, it was just the beginning of the adventure, but Smaug is definitely another level of amazing, more action, more adventure than the previous one, enough tension and it was engaging,  it finally felt like the prequel we were supposed to see.

The performances were strong, something we don’t get to see in adventure films, where the adventure is usually the main character, here, we’ve got great acting and a movie so perfectly directed it makes you feel real envy of those elves, dwarfs and orcs. So my friend, you are allowed to like the first one but I think denying the desolation of Smaug of the credit it deserves is wrong.

We parted ways, I felt empty inside, I felt I had an argument without a cause, against a wall, I vaguely recall comparing it to Two Towers and regretting it afterwards, never the less, I kept my soul clean and the satisfaction of watching a movie I waited 1 full year to see and felt really good at the end (unlike you, Iron Man).

Will I see this movie again? yes, I’ll just find some else to go with, maybe a dragon!

ROBOCOP – Trailer

Thor The Dark World

11 Nov

In the Marvel world I can safely say, we can find the best of the best and the worst of the worst.

If I knew I could trust you.

If I knew I could trust you.

To watch Thor for me is like a vivid dream where I can go places, travel the universe understand (sort of) the rules that get broken and dance around evil, it is fun, dangerous, basically my kind of movie.

I was worried about the sequel because we all know what happened with Iron Man… so, my expectations bar was way too low. However I managed to get very impressed by what I saw, and despite a few random incidents I think this film is quite solid on it own, the franchise is saved and there is story to go on for a while.

If I want to go on writing about the film I will have to spoil everything for everyone, and because I am not Loki, I wont,  there is just one little thing I want to say though… There is a reason the film was not incredibly great, there is a reason why there were some weird moments and unnecessary chats, the reason is: trying to please everyone! and as default make more money… but who am I to judge, in general the film pulled it off and I know the next one will only get better.

Besides, we have like a gazillion more Marvel characters and stories that potentially will become Hollywood hits.

Last century film review – Princess Mononoke 1997

14 Apr

That fantastic land only the very best storytellers can create.

Let us gather around the the table and talk about our future.

Let us gather around the table and talk about our future.

And quoting Queen ” is this the real life, is this just fantasy?… well people I hope it is fantasy, because it rules!

1997, the year where Mononoke- Hime was born from the amazing brains of Hayao Miyazake.

The adventure to discover the world around you, the things we don’t see, the things we take for granted, where you discover what sacrifices are you ready to make for the benefit of all are really gratifying.

What we get to see during this film is the collision of greed and neglect with the world we live a world passively trying to protect us just by providing those amazing things we are yet to discover; in this case our two heroes try to protect what is worth saving in their eyes, and if you ask me, and the way this is going, we humans are not worth saving!

There is a dark period for animation at the beginning of the 2000´s, leaving the last century with classic films for the eyes and for the brains, real work was done to create animation not with a message but with essence and imagination.

Lovely film with much more impact than we give it credit for.

Last Century Film – The Mask – 1994

16 Feb

oh the 90s, that mythical era were, well, good comedy was made!

This is me on the inside on the outside!

This is me on the inside on the outside!

And people were young and silly.

A colorful and fast paced comedy for its time, with Jim Carrey still discovering how good of a comedian he could be and Cameron Dias …. yes … SO!

As far as phantasy goes the film managed it quite gracefully, it also introduced the first canine I did not hate in a film, the story was unbelievably plausible in my opinion and that made it even funnier.

I loved about it specially the cartoon-like scenarios, they helped me identify more with the concept of the film and the overall silliness.

The Mask is a comedy classic, very funny and very unique, since then, a comedy of such characteristics is hard to find. Even if we can barely remember it or don’t know about it the film looms in the distance as that comedy that while never going over the top, it had the potential of doing so and people would still love it.

Reminiscent of the past? babysitting? this movie might be for you!

PS: Avoid at all costs re-makes or sequels they suck so much!

LIFE of PI – Review?

5 Jan

How can I  review a movie where life, faith, family and the universe collide in a magnificent explosion of emotions, colors, adventure and perfect forgiveness?

I think is time to take life into my own hands!

I think is time to take life into my own hands!

I cannot review or remotely rate this movie, it is single perfection, the only reason I go to the movies is to get to feel what I felt today watching LIFE of PI.

Today I saw one of the best films of my generation.

And if you don’t agree that this movie is pure gold, you are invited to have a chat over drinks with me and discuss what is wrong with you.

Nothing left for me to say, I am mesmerized beyond words and I have to thank Ang Lee for translating his brain into the screen for this film.

You have to see it please, this is serious stuff you are missing on.

Ted – Review

26 Dec

Not necessarily a very Christmas-y movie but I had to watch it before the new year.

Pull my finger

Pull my finger

I am not a hater of Seth MacFarlane, because you know, there is no grey with him, either you are in, or out, love him or hate him and I get him, don’t take his humor personal and see things with a certain neutrality so to get the jokes (a certain degree of popular culture and you will be okay for at least half his jokes).

Ted is the film he decided to show himself with, people to get to know him as a voice instead of a face. A romantic comedy that was neither too romantic or too funny, instead, in trying to achieve balance it felt plain and flavorless, as if it was too afraid to take a risk.

I think it is easier to take a risk on cinema than on TV but it was his choice.

What I found interesting about Ted is that it took a safe place, the teddy bear, and made him the evil version of ourselves, the result of all the years of frustrations, complains, tears, and punches a companion like that has to undertake to stay by our side; all that whining has to damage anything, specially little fluffy animals.

This teddy bear is best friends with  Mark Whalberg´s character and girlfriend Mila Kunis, he is a third wheel and co-dependant sociopath who refuses to realize that his life is his own… but in the film at the end it doesn’t matter.

Come to think of it, stop one second and look at your best friend and compare it to Ted, any similarities is pure coincidence?

The movie was complete, or as I call it movie making 101, the kind of movie you don’t want to screw up, because you know a lot of eyes will be on you, so better not disappoint, it did not; giggly and engaging, but nothing truly memorable or quote worthy.

So all those stars and points and tomatoes the movie is getting in the review world are probably true, it is a decent film that despite all the cursing, bad manners and doubtful behavior it still managed to grab our attention and curiosity to see what his creator will come up with next.

The Hobbit – Review

24 Dec

First of all I would like to wish you all the best during the festivities. And I hope you all spend the most wonderful time with the ones you love and cherish.

I am a fan of fantasy and action films, I will go to extreme lengths to get to see movies like that, for instance going to the cinema and watching Skyfall and The Hobbit back to back, it was intense to my senses but I managed to keep my cool.

I will go on an adventure with a bunch of hooligans... what can possibly go wrong!

I will go on an adventure with a bunch of hooligans… what can possibly go wrong!

You know,  by now half of the world and Middle Earth wonder why for a 3 book we got 3 movies and for one book we will get 3, we don’t know, but is disturbing to think that for 10 years of our lives we will be going to the movies and going nuts for just one movie franchise,… oh wait… we did… remember Harry Potter? well I guess we can’t have a lot from the good stuff then.

Back to the Hobbit.

I like the movie enough not to trash it; Mainly because of the huge implications of letting my blind love to this kind of films get ahead of a real review.

It was a movie where we got scene balance; we will go from a long passive situation to a huge action filled sequence like ping-pong, turning the film predictable at some point but engaging non the least.

But if you look at the film as a whole it delivered just enough, gave us the back story, gave us the dwarves (great casting there), gave us the action, gave us the bad guys, gave us the elves, gave us Smeagol (I kind of get what was the point of his extended presence but it was a bit too uncomfortable if you know what I mean) and gave us the RING! so as an appetizer it kind of worked.

Peter Jackson is a creative monster, capable of transforming fairytale words into the most unbelievable reality, at least for the screen and our amusement, the visuals in this film are out of this world.

Looking forward to the second installment where hopefully we will be treated like adults who know what we are talking about!

Now, where do I but my tickets to visit  New Zealand?
