Frozen – Review

23 Mar

First off, I love my brother and sisters deeply, can’t conceive a world without them! And not because I just saw Frozen but every day ….

I do my thing, you do yours, just don't screw up.

I do my thing, you do yours, just don’t screw up.

Frozen, quite surprising.

I was mostly curious about the Oscar-winning song, but, to be honest, it was the film that left me thinking if the movie I just saw was Disney,  a decent try to step out of the box non the less.

I enjoyed it maybe close to the way I enjoyed old Pixar, and that is a good thing. I also liked the proposed target audience, not for kids only (I know some children hated the snow monster).

It was close to Brave, in terms of portraying family values, upbringing and how to build strong personalities, again… none of that is a bad thing.

The song is pretty cool yes, the film is ok, funny and entertaining… the average for the genre, at least there’s effort to bring something to the table.

But I wonder when will an animated film  be as revolutionary and creative that just adults can go and see it “sans kids” (and I am talking about decent animations not the R rated type) something like Studio Gigli, or Toy Story, UP or Wall. E. Dont we miss those kind of films? I kind of do.

I will refer to my imaginary rating system and give it an: OK you are just fine!

American Hustle – Review

12 Mar

It was colorful, fast paced, interesting photography, cool directing, great dresses and amazing boobs.

Good soundtrack!

Good soundtrack!

But, I didn’t feel the era, didn’t feel transported to that time where people embraced the curl and synthetic materials, it was just a love story, a survival story, a very awkward situation with Oceans 11 or The Italian Job elements plastered all around trying to make it up for the star studded cast.

I felt the story, although in parts real, it was too far-fetched and dragged too long, maybe to give some screen time to some of the actors… I dont know, but, I love me some Jennifer Lawrence any time, but her character was too forced, some unnecessary scenes here and there…great performance but well… it just wasn’t a character to remember.

And that is where I want to go, none of the actors blended or disappeared into their roles, (well, I know not everyone can be Meryl Streep), for instance I could still see Bradley Cooper panicking in Bangkok and Batman’s voice all over the place but it was Amy Adams unbelievably bad British accent that threw me off and lost all hope.

This year the nominated for the awards were so different and specially entertaining in their own way, that it is hard to compare with one another, one thing is clear tough, American Husle was just entertainment, not a real contender in my point of view.

August: Osage County

26 Feb

And the vortex where all the dysfunction in the wold collides is right here ladies and gentleman.

I think I turned out just fine... just fine!!

I think I turned out just fine… just fine!!

August : Osage County is, without a doubt, every psychologist dream AND nightmare came true.

I am a sucker for a family drama where not a single person functions, everyone is so full of regrets and blame and in a way, they blend so well that it all plays out just fine, much like a perfect symphony, played for deaf people.

Here drama is real, regrets are not really important, what matters is blame and responsibility, who do you want to be next to when you grow old… how are you harvesting the seeds of a solid family tie.

This might sound heavy and the film heavy too, but it is not, Osage is the single most dynamic film of the year, it is even funny in moments, with a performance by Meryl Streep of the highest caliber and a very well balanced supporting cast.

Book and play are established as classics, the film makes it the triangle of perfect entertainment… I love it…

And you will love it too, if you are comfortable with realizing that your mother is actually not an evil witch trying to ruin your life… she is a frigging angel! You are very close to your siblings and your relationships are as normal as they get.

Gravity – Review

24 Jan

I took my time for this review. I know, we have all talked about it, good and bad things flourished about this film, mainly containing our feelings concerning heavy breathing, but in general we just gave it the necessary attention when it was time.

Huston I have control issues and over attaching tendencies.

Huston I have control issues and over attaching tendencies.

I could not stop but wonder, during the fastest 2 hours I can remember watching Gravity, there is no such thing as a normal life.

Nope, not a chance!

Things will happen to us, all the time, some good, some bad, some we will believe aren’t happening to us, but mostly: we will never be fully prepared for what can happen to us.

All we must master in this roller coaster of a life is the ability to improvise, apply common sense and breathe slowly.

Gravity is an intense, fast and incredibly realistic cinematic display of good acting, writing and directing. it does not feel crowded or far-fetched (much like super hero films, and I love them). A film with our beautiful planet in the background, and the only possible place where we can actually physically leave our troubles behind, but we wont because we suck at life (sometimes).

Other than pointing out that despite the advice of “don’t let go” we should do the opposite, I recommend to everyone who haven’t seen it, to go out and just do.

The Hobbit: The desolation of Smaug

27 Dec
Hey look that dragon can talk!

Hey look that dragon can talk!

6 days ago I went to the cinema to watch The Hobbit, with a friend who happens to like going to the movies just like me, he just doesn’t pay much of attention to them, so, when I asked him what did he think of the movie he said “the first one was better”

I respect people’s opinion just like anybody with a good sense of social interaction does, but after hearing that, I just started questioning myself and my choice in friends.

The first Hobbit my friend (I remember starting my clever reply this way) was amazing, it was different that TLOTR because it is another book, it was just the beginning of the adventure, but Smaug is definitely another level of amazing, more action, more adventure than the previous one, enough tension and it was engaging,  it finally felt like the prequel we were supposed to see.

The performances were strong, something we don’t get to see in adventure films, where the adventure is usually the main character, here, we’ve got great acting and a movie so perfectly directed it makes you feel real envy of those elves, dwarfs and orcs. So my friend, you are allowed to like the first one but I think denying the desolation of Smaug of the credit it deserves is wrong.

We parted ways, I felt empty inside, I felt I had an argument without a cause, against a wall, I vaguely recall comparing it to Two Towers and regretting it afterwards, never the less, I kept my soul clean and the satisfaction of watching a movie I waited 1 full year to see and felt really good at the end (unlike you, Iron Man).

Will I see this movie again? yes, I’ll just find some else to go with, maybe a dragon!

Thor The Dark World

11 Nov

In the Marvel world I can safely say, we can find the best of the best and the worst of the worst.

If I knew I could trust you.

If I knew I could trust you.

To watch Thor for me is like a vivid dream where I can go places, travel the universe understand (sort of) the rules that get broken and dance around evil, it is fun, dangerous, basically my kind of movie.

I was worried about the sequel because we all know what happened with Iron Man… so, my expectations bar was way too low. However I managed to get very impressed by what I saw, and despite a few random incidents I think this film is quite solid on it own, the franchise is saved and there is story to go on for a while.

If I want to go on writing about the film I will have to spoil everything for everyone, and because I am not Loki, I wont,  there is just one little thing I want to say though… There is a reason the film was not incredibly great, there is a reason why there were some weird moments and unnecessary chats, the reason is: trying to please everyone! and as default make more money… but who am I to judge, in general the film pulled it off and I know the next one will only get better.

Besides, we have like a gazillion more Marvel characters and stories that potentially will become Hollywood hits.
